Module I Basic Certification Training Workshop
June 2 - 6 (40 Hours)
This 40-hour introductory course is required for all levels of SAVE International certification.
Instructors Renee Hoekstra, CVS, and Laurie Dennis, PE, CVS-Life, of RH & Associates, Inc. (RHA) continually get high ratings on all of the presentations they have done for various organizatations, including SAVE International and have taught certification training courses. “We believe in a high energy and fun environment to ensure that attendees enjoy being in the class,” says Hoekstra. “We can guarantee that the attendees will enjoy the class and the Value Methodology.” Hoekstra and Dennis have taught together successfully over the past five years. RHA has an on-call contract with Caltrans to provide all of their VM training including Module I, Module II, team member training, and introduction to VM for both staff and sponsors.
The instructors focus on getting attendees really to understand the materials provided so they have the ability to see how the Value Methodology (VM) can be used on a day-to-day basis in their business. Instructors also emphasize using VM to improve business processes. Hoekstra and Dennis bring experience in construction, manufacturing, and business proceses. The curriculum includes using VM in helping contractors develop winning proposals for design-build and construction manager at risk projects.
Module II Advanced Certification Training Seminar
June 4 - 6 (24 Hours)
Randy S. Thomas, CVS, and Les M. Thomas, PE, CVS-Life return for a third year to teach their popular Module II advanced certification training seminar. Evaluations from students consistently show high scores in instructor effectiveness and willingness to recommend the course to colleagues.
This course may be claimed for continuing education credit for VMP certification and is required for CVS certification. The Module II seminar may not be taken less than six months after completing the Module I workshop.
The husband-and-wife team taught the Module II seminar at both the 2009 and 2010 annual conferences. All students who attended their seminar and subsequently took the exam for CVS certification passed.
The Thomases target course material to the attendees’ needs to ensure understanding of theory and application of the Value Methodology. They believe that “a trained user becomes a good user and is then a promoter of the Value Methodology.”
Enhanced Brainstorming Using TRIZ
June 5 - 6 (16 Hours)
Most value engineering projects use FAST diagrams to reveal cause-and-effect in a system. Following this, traditional brainstorming methods are used to identify opportunities to improve system functioning. Traditional brainstorming is limited by the experiences of the participants in the room and is often plagued with psychological inertia. This workshop will provide a structured approach to brainstorming that is based on the fundamentals of TRIZ.
TRIZ is the Russian acronym for Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. This theory is based on a 60-year study of over 2 million worldwide patents. The application of the fundamentals of TRIZ will be integrated with FAST diagrams. The benefit of this approach is to break down psychological inertia by applying a structured set of abstract solution principles to the functions resulting in more innovative ideas generated in less time.
This workshop expands upon the basics of FAST diagramming and demonstrates how to connect improvement opportunities with function models. It provides a guided brainstorming approach to the creativity step in the value engineering method.
The course will be taught by John S. Borza, PE, AVS, TRIZ MBB, and Peter Hanik, PE, TRIZ MBB. Hanik and Borza taught the course previously at SAVE conferences.
Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) Training
June 6 (8 Hours)
Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) Training is designed to impart knowledge on preparation, calculating, submitting and processing VECPs for both prime and subcontractors contractors and government agencies. Training is conducted using interactive case studies that cover various types of contracts and elements of VECPs. Helpful tools are demonstrated. A CD provided to each attendee contains all the cases covered in the course and tools that are available for use after the course.
This new course offering will be taught by Hank Ball, CVS, who has taught popular pre-conference workshops for several years.
Risk Analysis for Value Methodology Practitioners
June 6 (8 Hours)
Risk management, as a component of VM, can be conducted as a stand-alone workshop or as an integrated component of a value study. Risk management supports the VM principles of enhancing overall value and delivering desired functionality at the optimal function, cost, and time components through effective management and proactive response mechanisms. This course will cover integrating risk management into VM, developing an effective risk management framework, qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing risk, observing economic uncertainties, developing a risk management plan, to implementing active risk monitoring and control measures. This comprehensive course offers effective techniques that can be incorporated into any facilitator’s toolbox.
Attendees should bring a laptop computer to use during the workshop.
This course will be taught by Gregory Brink, CVS, PMI-RMP, CCE/A, and Robert B. Stewart, CVS-Life, FSAVE, PMP, who co-taught the Risk Management workshop at the 2010 conference.
